The foundation of The Queendom of Fantasy Land
This week I spend a lovely session with two young ladies, we spend just over an hour building a new country.
Why you may ask, because the young people we work with here at BANG are smart, creative, imaginative, opinionated and very capable. By giving them a task which requires them to think about , discuss and make group decisions not only gives them a platform to express themselves but it also acts as a space to feel valued and listened to . The task was very simple as a duo they were going to begin to build a country. With the aid of an excellent guide written by Valarie Wyatt, we started out with the best bit – we named the country. The decision was made:
The Queendom of Fantasy Land.
From here we read about other countries and how they came into existence, countries who’s named have changed over the years and a whole host of fun facts about the world. Then we began thinking about how the country attracted citizens, the ladies discussed the pros and cons of invasion but one lady pointed out that there are refugees who might like to come to their country, and once again it was decided .The boarders of The Queendom of Fantasy Land would be open to all refugees. After that the ladies designed and created passports for their citizens – here after known as “Queenies” They discussed what should be on a passport and why it was important to have one. They worked as a team and divided up the labour and one designed and created a flag and a national anthem, while the other created a replicate of the countries national dress. The whole time consulting one another, making sure they both agreed and generally exhibiting excellent communication skills. They then choose their countries Motto “Queens stay clean, with honestly and trust” We read other countries mottos and the ladies felt being honest and truthful who something they held as an important value. Sadly the sessions hours’ time limit was already well up and we went to show eager parents in the kitchens their work. Next session we are going to discuss how the Queendom of Fantasy Land is going to govern its people, they are going to decide on a currency and talk about how it wants the world to see them.
Yes we used imagination, yes we had great fun with arts and crafts but we also talked about serious issues and the ladies began to think about what it means to be a global citizen.
